is freedom of the press defined as the freedom to incite and deceive, or that of obtaining bribes in exchange for news, commendation, and attacks on others?

While the Lebanese journalists are busy, on Press Freedom Day, enumerating and reviewing the abuses, the harassments and the threats (that reach to killing, to a degree), that they have been and are still being exposed to while practicing their job, which btw is a crucial and dangerous issue, no one even cares, not during this day or any other one, to talk about the further aspect of this freedom. That is, the distressing, petrifying, and humiliating level that the Lebanese press has reached, little by little, in all its forms. And if this situation is not recent, it was established with the “family institutions”, where some of which are still to this day present among us.

And even if it might not be a widespread case, it is subsequently and constantly moving towards the worst, and it is becoming a practice and a culture prevailing in numerous press institutions plus their employees. In addition, bypassing the monopolies and the high cost of production through the new media over the past years only led to perpetuating this mercenary sense among many journalists, especially with the rise in the number of press institutions of various sizes and influence.

What’s required, today and every day, is to defend the freedom of the press of course, but to also in parallel, defend the occupational practice, at least in its minimum limits, against the press of deception and incitement, and to defend the press and its employees against the commendation of journalists, the messages, the sources and the bribes.

And to fight for the rights of the society and its members and the marginalized people against those with money and with weapons.

Primarily, the Lebanese press is not one single body. Distinguishing and separating the diverse journalistic practices is a first duty in the defense of freedom.
