Shameful situations in the life of Sejaan Azzi

Sejaan Azzi (formerly affiliated with the Kataeb party) served in the Ministry of Labor from February 2014 to December 2016, when Tammam Salam was prime minister. Those three years have seen countless racist and hostile attitudes towards foreign workers and Syrian refugees, under the pretext of defending Lebanese workers (whose conditions, of course, never improved) and the Lebanese identity.

Because we believe that burying the dead is an obligation, we review here some of these attitudes, limiting them to the period in which he took office (with the exception of one that was issued a few months later), knowing that his political practice was generally characterized by racism, incitement, sectarianism and classism.

The Minister of Labor, Sejaan Azzi, explained in front of 180 Arab and foreign countries that “the unemployment rate among the Lebanese has reached 21% since the beginning of the Syrian displacement with 35% of the Lebanese youth being out of work”. He added, “but, more dangerous is the figure we received at the cabinet that 34% of the crimes in Lebanon are committed by Syrians”.

Al-Safir newspaper, June 6, 2014

On the evening of the conference for the establishment of a General Union of Cleaning Workers and Social Care, the authorities moved in to prevent such an abrupt breach. The Minister of Labor, Sejaan Azzi, went so far as to directly threaten the organizers. He called them, threatening to use the security forces to forcibly halt the conference.

Al-Akhbar newspaper, January 26, 2015

Azzi sarcastically expressed his willingness to “grant the Lebanese citizenship to 420,000 Asians and Africans, so that Lebanon would become more colorful instead of multi-sectarian.”

A statement to The New Arab newspaper, February 3, 2015

Azzi said that addressing the issue of street children was a priority for the government because it is  “a ticking time bomb. Misery, deprivation and hatred create, not only religious extremism, but also terrorism, which makes these children potential terrorists.”

The New Arab newspaper, February 17, 2015

“Palestinian and Syrian refugees are not potential terrorists or ticking time bombs just because they’re Palestinians or Syrians. Any refugee or displaced person in any country can be so because they have been through a tragedy. Tragedies generate evilness, not goodness. This is human nature and it has been proven throughout history.”

Interview with The New Arab newspaper, March 4, 2015

“Domestic workers are excluded from the provisions of the Labor Law and therefore cannot form a union. Likewise, it is not possible to establish a union for non-Lebanese.”

Al-Akhbar newspaper, May 4, 2015

“The crime that took place today, and the videotape that’s been circulating for a few days of a worker assaulting a child to death in his home, along with other things that happen on a daily basis, should be a hindrance to organizations that are impassioned for the rights of foreign workers, as if they alone were were at risk (…) It is true that we we hear of female workers committing suicide from time to time, but research shows that suicide sometimes is a result of depression that may affect any person in the world…”.

A statement to Al-Jumhuriya newspaper, December 20, 2015

“Therefore, it is very crucial to double the security and the military measures – the Lebanese army is very vigilant in this regard – along the Lebanese borders on the one hand, and in the Lebanese interior on the other, where there are many terrorist outposts disguised as civilians, who are abusing the tragedy of the displaced Syrians to permeate their ranks as well as their residential communities.”

“Now is not the time to discuss organizing the accommodation for displaced Syrians inside the camps, we must rather talk about their return to their homeland in order to control their random expansion.”

Two statements, on 27 and 28 June 2016, commenting on the al-Qaa bombings

“There is a crisis that goes beyond the previous Syrian military presence in Lebanon, which is the presence of one and a half million displaced Syrians among us…”.

A statement to al-Safir newspaper, July 2, 2016

“The Lebanese people are becoming more like the Palestinians and the Syrians, in their quest for their land, entity, independence and stability (…). Organizations such as al-Qaeda, ISIS, al-Nusra and all sorts of extremists wouldn’t have deluged the political situation and the situation on the ground had the Syrians not left their country.”

Press conference, September 19, 2016

“While I do not view displaced Syrians in a sectarian way, my point of view, as a Christian concerned about the continuity of his presence here and the strong unity of Lebanon, becomes somewhat sectarian when the displaced become settlers. This “sectarian” view is not so , but rather its supremely the most national and humanitarian stance, because the balance of the Lebanese existence necessitates being content with one people in Lebanon. Displacement movements change societies more than wars do.”
