The municipality of Harajel oppresses the “foreign workers”

As part of a series of racist and classist decisions against workers and foreigners pursued by municipalities in Lebanon, the municipality of Harajel (Keserwan district) posed a curfew on foreign workers on public roads in the town, from 7 pm until 6 am, as stated in the decision of the president Tony Zogheib, issued on the 19th of April.

This is not the first time that the municipality has taken such a decision against Syrian workers and refugees, as the same one was issued during the summer of 2022, and in 2020.

In addition, during 2016, when the campaign of attacks against Syrians was ongoing, Harajel was one of the first municipalities to issue “regulations for the displaced Syrians in the town”, with a number of other municipalities inhibiting the roaming of  Syrian refugees around.

Back then, the municipality threatened to search the rooms inhabited by the refugees through the municipal police, deport all those who were not employed, seize “illegal” means of transportation, deport Syrians that carry no legal papers, and identify the number of people living in one room.
