A woman and her husband expelled by two sheikhs at Saida beach

A woman and her husband were attacked by two sheikhs and their henchmen in Saida, Sunday afternoon (May 14), where they were forced to leave the city’s public beach. The two sheikhs felt like they had the right to expel them because they did not like what she was wearing.

The woman explained to “Akhbar al-Saha” that she was sitting there along with her husband, wearing a bathing suit, drinking her coffee and reading a book, when two sheikhs and a man approached them, (one of whom is called Abed el-Karim Allawa, and the other she couldn’t figure), and started inappropriately insulting them.

After that, according to her, they threatened them to leave the place within 10 minutes, “orelse!”.

After ten minutes, the two sheikhs came back accompanied by about 15 men to kick the family out. “They threw sand at us, beat us, dragged my belongings, played with a ball over our heads, they even hit me with something on the head, and threw dirty water bottles at us.”

At some point during all this, one of the two sheikhs asked the husband, “How are you okay with this?” He told him that she’s his wife and that it’s nobody’s business. He then turned to the woman and asked her “you’re exposed?” meaning not wearing a headscarf. She said, “I am free to wear whatever I want,” to which he answered, “Does this mean I am now free to undress for you?”

Two local men  tried to intervene to deter them, but to no avail. After about 40 minutes of harassment, the family eventually left. “We stayed calm, but they, on the contrary,  tried to throw hands”, and that was when the sheikh asked them to “bring him here”, referring to the husband. He then told us to “go away, Saida is not yours. Go back to your own areas”

The woman assures that she is a resident of Saida, but even if she’s not, she still has the right to enjoy the public beach, especially that she has been going to the same place for about five years and has never been subjected to a similar incident before. However, this time, “it seems that they were sent for this very purpose,” as one of the men said upon their arrival that they’re here to conduct a raid.

She added, “They came here strong. They know very well that we are not protected. They got sent here, not caring about anything. Not even a government or a municipality; nothing.” One of them told her, “call whoever you want, we couldn’t care less”

The family did not seek help from the police, because “there is no point in that,” according to the victim. However, she informed the municipality, whose response was, “let it go.”
